Can You Take Cannabis Out of Thailand? No, and Here Is What It Costs

Taking cannabis out of Thailand is illegal and since June 2026 carries a customs fine of 30,000 baht per kilogram plus up to two years in prison. What to do with what you have left.

This is the shortest possible answer: no, and it has got considerably more expensive to get wrong.

The rule

Buying cannabis legally in Thailand gives you exactly one right, which is to have it in Thailand, with a prescription. It confers nothing at the border.

Since 17 June 2026 Thai Customs fines anyone caught taking cannabis out of the country 30,000 baht per kilogram, and up to two years’ imprisonment if the fine is not paid or on conviction. That regime came in after a run of seizures of Thai-origin cannabis abroad, and enforcement is concentrated at airport departures.

Exporting commercially is a different thing again and needs a licence from the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine plus a certified source. That is not a route available to a visitor with a jar in their bag.

Two separate legal systems are involved and both have to be satisfied.

Thailand controls what leaves. Your destination controls what arrives. A Thai receipt and a Thai prescription are evidence that you bought it, which in the wrong airport is evidence against you rather than for you.

Several countries in this region treat cannabis importation with extreme severity, including life imprisonment and, in some, the death penalty. We are not going to list penalties country by country, because they change and because getting one of them wrong in either direction would be irresponsible. The safe rule covers all of them: it does not leave with you.

Coming the other way

Bringing cannabis into Thailand is also prohibited. Plant material and extracts cannot be imported, with narrow exceptions for government agencies, public academic research and licensed clinical trials.

This catches people out who have a legitimate prescription at home. It is not recognised here, and the product is not admissible here. If you need cannabis while you are in Thailand, the route is a Thai practitioner and a Thai prescription.

What to do with what is left

Plan for it the way you plan for liquids.

Finish it, or do not buy it. If you are flying on Tuesday, do not buy a week’s worth on Sunday.

Give it to someone staying. Perfectly reasonable, and better than a bin.

Throw it away before you leave for the airport. Not in the terminal. At the hotel.

Empty the bag properly. The most common way people get caught is not smuggling, it is forgetting. A single joint in a jacket pocket from four days ago is the thing that ruins a holiday. Check the bag you actually fly with, not the one you think you packed.

Accessories

A grinder that has been used is not cannabis, but it can smell like it and it can carry residue. If you are travelling on to somewhere strict, the sensible move is to leave it or clean it thoroughly.

The honest summary

We sell this stuff and we are telling you to leave it behind. That is not a legal disclaimer, it is the actual advice. Thirty thousand baht a kilogram is the cheap outcome, and the cheap outcome is still a very bad day.

Common questions

Can I fly home with cannabis bought legally in Thailand?

No. Buying it legally in Thailand gives you no right to remove it. Since 17 June 2026 Thai Customs fines anyone caught taking cannabis out of the country 30,000 baht per kilogram, with up to two years' imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

What is the penalty for taking cannabis out of Thailand?

A Thai Customs fine of 30,000 baht per kilogram, introduced on 17 June 2026, and up to two years in prison. That is only the Thai side. The country you land in applies its own law, and in several countries in the region the penalties are far more severe.

Can I bring cannabis into Thailand?

No. Importing cannabis plant material and extracts into Thailand is prohibited, with narrow exceptions for government agencies, academic research and licensed clinical trials. Your prescription from home does not change that.

Is it safe to carry cannabis to Laos, Malaysia or Cambodia?

No. Taking cannabis across any Thai land border is illegal, and penalties in neighbouring countries are severe, including in some cases life imprisonment or death. Do not do it.

What should I do with cannabis I have not used before flying?

Leave it behind. Finish it, give it to someone staying, or throw it away before you go to the airport. Nothing you have left is worth the fine or the arrest.
