Getting a prescription in Chiang Mai
It is a half-hour conversation with a practitioner, not a medical ordeal. Here is exactly how it goes, so nothing about it surprises you.

Since June 2025, buying cannabis flower in Thailand legally means holding a PT 33 prescription from a licensed practitioner. Plenty of people hear the word prescription and assume it means hospitals, paperwork and a week of waiting. It does not. For most people it is one short appointment.
We work with a practitioner, so we can tell you when consultations are running and get you pointed the right way. We do it whether or not you buy from us afterwards, because a visitor who understands the rules is better for everyone here.
- Message us first Send us a message on LINE or WhatsApp before you come. We will tell you which practitioner is running consultations that day and roughly what the wait looks like.
- Bring your passport Visitors use a passport in place of a Thai ID card. Bring the physical passport, not a photo of it. If you have a Thai ID, bring that instead.
- Have the consultation A licensed practitioner runs a short consultation, usually around thirty minutes. They will ask what you are looking for and about anything relevant in your medical history.
- Receive your PT 33 If a prescription is appropriate, the practitioner issues a PT 33 (ใบสั่งยา ปท. 33). It names what you may buy and in what quantity.
- Buy at a licensed shop Present the PT 33 at a licensed dispensary. The shop records the sale against the prescription, which is a legal requirement and also why we ask for your details.
What it costs
Consultation fees are set by the practitioner, not by us, and they vary. Ask us on LINE before you come and we will tell you the current figure rather than guess at one here and have it go stale.
A few honest notes
- Do not lie in the consultation. The practitioner is making a clinical judgement. Tell them what you actually take and what you are actually after.
- Keep the prescription on you. It is the thing that makes what you are carrying legal.
- It does not travel. Valid in Thailand, nowhere else, and not at any border. Finish what you buy or leave it behind.
- You must be 20 or over. No exceptions, and the same applies if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What is a PT 33 prescription?
A PT 33 (ใบสั่งยา ปท. 33) is the prescription form a licensed Thai practitioner issues for controlled herbs, including cannabis flower. It has been required for buying or holding cannabis flower in Thailand since 26 June 2025.
How long does it take to get a cannabis prescription in Chiang Mai?
The consultation itself usually takes about thirty minutes. Most people who message ahead are seen and sorted the same day.
What do I need to bring to a cannabis consultation in Thailand?
Bring a physical passport if you are a visitor, or a Thai ID card if you have one. It helps to know any medication you are currently taking and any relevant medical history.
Can a tourist get a cannabis prescription in Chiang Mai?
Yes. Tourists use the same PT 33 process as Thai nationals, with a passport in place of a Thai ID card. Nothing about the process is restricted to residents.
How long is a PT 33 prescription valid?
Validity is set by the practitioner on the prescription itself and depends on what has been prescribed. Ask at your consultation so you know where you stand before you travel on.
Does a Thai cannabis prescription work in other countries?
No. A PT 33 is valid in Thailand only. Carrying cannabis across any Thai border is a serious criminal offence regardless of the prescription.
