Storing Cannabis in a Humid Climate

Northern Thailand sits above 80 percent humidity for months. What that does to flower, what actually works to stop it, and the mistakes that ruin good cannabis fastest.

Chiang Mai sits above eighty percent relative humidity for a good chunk of the year. That is hard on the plant while it is growing, and it is hard on the flower after you have bought it.

Most people get given a bag, put it in a rucksack, and wonder two weeks later why it smells of nothing.

What humidity actually does

Too much and you get mould. Cannabis flower is dense and the interior of a bud stays damp long after the outside feels dry. Mould in cannabis is not a quality problem, it is a health problem, and smoking it is a genuinely bad idea.

Too little and the terpenes evaporate. This is the more common outcome for visitors, especially with air conditioning running constantly. The flower does not rot, it just goes progressively duller and harsher until it is essentially plant matter.

The window is somewhere around 55 to 65 percent relative humidity inside the container. You do not need to measure it. You need to not do the obviously wrong things.

What works

Glass with a proper seal. A jar with a gasket. This is ninety percent of it. If your shop gave you a good jar, keep it and reuse it.

Out of direct light. UV degrades cannabinoids and terpenes. A cupboard, a drawer, anywhere dark.

A stable room. An air-conditioned bedroom is ideal not because it is cold but because it is constant. Swings in temperature drive moisture around inside the container.

Two-way humidity packs, if you are here a while and buying in quantity. They hold a set humidity in both directions. Cheap and they work.

Small containers. A large jar with three grams in it is mostly air, and air is the enemy. Match the container to the amount.

What does not

Plastic bags. They breathe, they build static that strips trichomes, and they crush the flower. Fine for the walk home, not for a week.

The fridge. Humid, and every door opening cycles the temperature and condenses moisture inside your container. Popular advice, bad advice.

The freezer. Frozen trichomes are brittle and snap off at a touch. You lose exactly the part you paid for.

A windowsill, a scooter topbox, a car. Heat and light together, which is the fastest way to destroy flower that exists.

Grinding in advance. Ground cannabis has vastly more surface area and goes flat within days. Grind what you are about to use.

How to tell it has gone

Mould: grey or white fuzz that is not trichomes, or a musty smell like a damp cupboard. Throw it away. All of it, not the bit that looks fine.

Dried out: it crumbles to dust rather than breaking apart, smells faintly of hay, and smokes harsh. Not dangerous, just disappointing.

Flat: still looks fine, smells of very little. The terpenes have gone. Still works, tastes of nothing.

If you are travelling around Thailand

Buy smaller amounts more often. A 30 gram jar sounds economical until you have carried it through a week of buses, guesthouses without air conditioning, and afternoon heat.

Keep the jar in the middle of your bag rather than an outside pocket. Clothes are decent insulation.

And do not carry it across a border. Different article, same answer: no.

Common questions

How should I store cannabis in Thailand?

Airtight glass, out of direct light, somewhere that is not tracking the outdoor temperature. A sealed jar in an air-conditioned room is most of the job. Avoid the fridge and never the freezer.

Does cannabis go bad in humidity?

Yes, in two directions. Too humid and you risk mould, which makes it unusable. Too dry and the terpenes evaporate and it turns harsh. Both happen faster in a tropical climate.

Can I keep cannabis in the fridge?

Better not. A fridge is humid and every time you open it you cycle the temperature, which drives condensation inside the container. A cool dark cupboard in an air-conditioned room beats a fridge.

How long does cannabis last once opened?

In a sealed jar in stable conditions, months. Opened repeatedly in a hot humid room, you will notice it going flat within a couple of weeks.

How do I know if cannabis has mould?

Look for grey or white fuzz that does not look like trichomes, and smell for anything musty, like a damp cupboard. If you suspect mould, throw it out. It is not worth the lung infection.
