How Much Does Weed Cost in Chiang Mai?

What you should expect to pay per gram in Chiang Mai, why the same cultivar varies so much between shops, and how to tell a fair price from a tourist price.

Last reviewed

Prices in Chiang Mai are genuinely all over the place, and not always for bad reasons. Here is what actually drives them.

The rough shape of it

Across the city you will see roughly:

  • Outdoor and greenhouse flower, around 100 to 200 baht a gram
  • Mid-shelf indoor, around 200 to 300
  • Top-shelf indoor, around 300 to 450
  • Imported, or the genuinely rare stuff, 500 and up

Those are bands, not a price list, and they move. Our own menu sits between 250 and 550 a gram depending on the cultivar, which is mid-to-upper for this city and reflects that a good part of it is grown at our own farm.

Why the same name costs double down the road

How it was grown. Indoor costs more to produce than greenhouse, which costs more than outdoor. That is electricity and labour, and it shows up in the price legitimately.

Whether it was imported. Imported flower carries cost that Thai-grown does not.

How well it was grown and cured. This is the one that does not show on a label. Northern Thailand’s wet season is brutally hard on dense flower, and the difference between a grower who managed humidity and one who did not is enormous. You are partly paying for competence.

Rent. A shop on a heavily touristed street is paying for that street, and you are paying for it too.

What they think you will pay. Less common than the internet suggests, but real. A shop that will not tell you the price until it has sized you up is telling you something.

Price is a weak signal of quality

This is the part worth internalising. Well-grown greenhouse at 250 baht beats badly cured indoor at 500 most days of the week.

Better signals:

  • Can they tell you where it was grown, and do they answer immediately
  • Does it smell of anything from a foot away
  • Is it in a sealed jar, out of direct light, in a room with the air conditioning on
  • Does it crumble to dust, or feel damp and spongy

A shop that stores flower in a hot display case under a spotlight is losing you terpenes no matter what it cost.

Buying in bulk

Most shops, us included, price 7g, 14g and 30g progressively lower per gram. The saving is real.

Two things to weigh against it. A prescription covers at most thirty days’ supply, so the quantity you can buy is not unlimited. And in this climate, opened flower degrades fast. Buying thirty grams and working through it slowly in a humid apartment means the last third is not the same product as the first.

Prices you can check before you walk in

Ours are on the strain library, per gram, the same numbers as the board in the shop. Not every shop publishes, and there are reasons for that, but being able to check before you travel across town is worth something.

If a shop will not give you a price over a message, that is your answer about how the conversation in person will go.

Common questions

How much is a gram of cannabis in Chiang Mai?

Most shops sit somewhere between about 150 and 600 baht a gram depending on grade. Outdoor and greenhouse flower is at the bottom, imported or high-end indoor at the top, and the majority of what people actually buy falls in the middle.

Why do prices vary so much between shops in Chiang Mai?

Growing method, whether the shop imported it, whether it was grown well, and how much of the price is location. A shop on a tourist street pays rent a shop on a side soi does not.

Is cannabis cheaper in Chiang Mai than Bangkok?

Generally yes, modestly, because a great deal of Thai cannabis is grown in the north and the supply chain is shorter. The difference is smaller than people expect.

Is expensive cannabis better in Thailand?

Not reliably. Price tracks growing cost and shop overheads more than quality. Well-grown greenhouse flower at 250 baht routinely beats badly cured indoor at 500.

Should I buy in bulk to save money?

Per gram, yes, and most shops price 7g and above lower. Weigh that against a prescription covering at most thirty days' supply, and against cannabis degrading quickly in this climate once opened.
