Cannabis Edibles in Chiang Mai: Go Slower Than You Think
Edibles hit later and harder than smoking, and that catches out more visitors in Chiang Mai than anything else. How they work and how not to ruin your evening.

More visitors have a bad night in Chiang Mai because of an edible than because of anything else, and the reason is always the same. They waited half an hour, felt nothing, and took another one.
Why they are different
When you inhale cannabis, THC goes through your lungs into your blood. Fast, and it fades within a couple of hours.
When you eat it, it goes through your digestive system and your liver first. The liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which crosses into the brain more readily than the original compound.
Two consequences:
They take 30 to 90 minutes. Sometimes longer on a full stomach. There is a real gap between eating and feeling.
They feel stronger and last longer. The same nominal milligrams eaten can be considerably more intense than smoked, and the effect runs four to eight hours rather than two.
That combination is what catches people. The delay invites a second dose, and the second dose arrives on top of a first that was already stronger than expected.
The rule
Take one dose. Wait two hours. Do not take more inside that window.
That is the whole safety guidance and it prevents almost every bad edible experience.
If you are new to edibles, or you have not consumed in years, start at 2.5 to 5mg of THC. Experienced smokers routinely underestimate this because their inhaled tolerance does not transfer cleanly.
If you overdo it
It is deeply unpleasant and it is not dangerous. Nobody has died from too much cannabis.
Go somewhere quiet and safe. Drink water. Sit or lie down. Have someone with you if you can. It passes, usually within a few hours, and you will feel washed out the next day.
Do not drive and do not get on a scooter. In Chiang Mai that is the actual risk, not the cannabis.
The Thai legal position

One warning specific to Thailand
Cannabis-infused food and drink is sold fairly casually in some places here, sometimes without clear dosing and occasionally without the buyer fully registering what they ordered. If a cafe offers you a “special” cookie or shake, ask directly how many milligrams and whether it has been tested.
If they cannot answer, do not eat it. An unknown dose of something that peaks ninety minutes later is not a good gamble in an unfamiliar city.
