CBD in Chiang Mai: Legal Without a Prescription

CBD is the part of the Thai cannabis conversation that did not change in 2025, which makes it the simplest thing to explain.

The legal position

CBD and hemp products containing under 0.2 percent THC are legal in Thailand and need no prescription. They sit outside the controlled herb framework entirely.

Above 0.2 percent THC, extracts are still Category 5 narcotics, which is a more serious category than flower and not something any legitimate shop sells over the counter.

So the line is 0.2 percent, and it is a real line rather than a guideline.

What CBD actually does

CBD is not intoxicating. It will not get you high, and a product under 0.2 percent THC does not contain enough THC to change that.

What people use it for, in plain terms, is a general calming effect without the head change. Some find it helps with sleep. Some use it topically on sore muscles or joints.

We are going to stop short of medical claims, and so should any shop you buy from. Thai regulation is strict about health claims on cannabis products and, more to the point, the honest answer is that CBD research is still thinner than the marketing suggests. Some people notice a lot. Some notice nothing. It is inexpensive enough to find out for yourself.

What you will find in Chiang Mai

Oils and tinctures. Under the tongue, the most common format. Strength is usually given in milligrams of CBD per bottle.

Topicals. Balms and creams for muscles and joints. Applied to skin, nothing enters the bloodstream in any meaningful quantity.

CBD flower. Hemp flower bred for CBD with THC under the limit. Smells and looks like cannabis, does not produce the same effect.

Drinks and edibles. Widely sold in Chiang Mai cafes. Doses are often low, so read the label rather than the sign.

How to buy sensibly

Check the milligrams, not the bottle size. A large bottle of weak oil is worse value than a small bottle of strong oil. Compare mg of CBD, not millilitres.

Ask for a lab report. Reputable Thai CBD products have one, showing CBD content and confirming THC under 0.2 percent. A seller who cannot produce one is asking you to take their word for the only two numbers that matter.

Start low. More is not automatically better and the dose that works varies a lot between people.

Watch the THC figure if you are drug tested. Even under 0.2 percent, heavy long-term use of full-spectrum products has occasionally produced positive tests. If your work tests, choose a broad-spectrum or isolate product.

Taking it home

Be careful here. Thailand’s rules are not the world’s rules, and plenty of countries treat anything cannabis-derived as prohibited regardless of THC content. Some will not care at all. Check your destination before you pack it, and do not assume a Thai receipt helps.
